Meet the Artist |
Alexander Kostner
is a young and talented wood carver from the Tyrol
in Italy. His mother work on the initial
sketches, Alexander carves, and his sister does the
painting! We thank the Lord for bringing
Alexander to us. His work is both inspiring
and unique. For more information about
Alexander, check out his website:

The Altars: These
hand-carved Altars beautifully depict our devotion
first and foremost to Our Eucharistic Lord, but also
to Our Lady of Solitude and the Saints. The
Altar on the public side features statues which go
around the whole base of the Altar. Sketches
of the Saints are pictured below. Outside of
the Angel which bears the Franciscan Shield and
Saint John the Baptist (our beloved desert Patron),
all the Saints are Franciscans of either Franciscan
Friars, Poor Clares, or Third Order Franciscans.
The Altar on the Cloister side
was inspired by a similar Altar in the Crypt where
Padre Pio's relics are venerated. A
hand-carved statue of the Dead Savior lies beneath
the mensa of the Altar, reminiscent of Holy
Saturday. Devotion to Our Lady of Solitude
hearkens back to Holy Saturday, when Our Lady waited
alone and in silence for the Resurrection and
Ultimate Victory of her Son. This Altar will
serve to remind the Sisters of their call to imitate
Our Lady in her solitude and silence.
Each Altar will have a white
marble mensa.

The Reredos: The Reredos
is the large wooden structure that separates the
public side of the Chapel from the cloister side.
As you will note in the photos below, in the center
of the reredos, there are 2 doors with angels on
them. Behind these doors will be the
Monstrance. After we begin perpetual
adoration, the doors will remain opened, with the
Most Blessed Sacrament exposed, all day long
(excepting Mass, when the doors will be closed).
The Reredos have elements of
medieval architecture worked into their design, as
you will note particularly in the turret design
found on the pillars. Near the top of the
center portion, there is a 'sun-like' shape with IHS
in the center, which is representative of devotion
to the Holy Name of Jesus, as fostered by the great
Franciscan Preacher, St. Bernardine of Siena.
On opposite sides of the reredos,
are statues of Our Lady, Queen of the Franciscan
Order and St. Joseph, who is holding a small replica
of the Portiuncula Chapel where our Franciscan Order
was founded. Above the Tabernacle, in the
lower center portion, you will see two Angels
holding a banner with the Latin phrase: Et Verbum
Caro Factum Est (And the Word was made Flesh).

The
Sanctuary Crucifix
To the right, you see the Sanctuary Crucifix,
from sketch to completion. It is a replica of the
Crucifix which hangs in San Damiano, Assisi.
It will hang on the public side of the
Chapel, behind the celebrant's chair.
It will be able to be seen by the Nuns when
they are in their Mass Choir.
Alexander shipped this beautiful Crucifix in
July 2007. It has arrived safely in
Arizona! Deo Gratias.

| The Communion Rail:
This Communion rail will be positioned in the front
of the Church to separate the Sanctuary from the
rest of the Altar. It will be approximately 24 feet long
and will have a gate in the center, through which
the Priest may enter. Angels will be on each
end of the Communion rail, with two on each side of
the gate as well.

the remaining funding for the Communion Rail
